Culinary Management Careers

A culinary management career is one that is full of responsibility and coordination. As a food service manager, you’ll be responsible for ensuring that the day to day operations of a restaurant or other culinary establishment run smoothly. You’ll be expected to coordinate between departments like the kitchen and dining room, while at the same time overseeing inventory, equipment, supplies, and human resources. It will also be your job to deal with customer and employee problems. You will also be responsible for many administration tasks, such as sanitation requirements and payroll.

Generally, becoming a culinary manager requires that you have experience in food and beverage preparation and serving. It is also helpful if you have completed coursework, or a full certificate or degree program in culinary management education. Many food service managers start out by working in smaller positions within restaurants, and as they gain experience and education, move to higher positions, including management. Your level of education and experience will generally dictate your position in culinary management, which can include executive chef, assistant manager, and general manager. The work environment is often hectic, with long hours and noisy kitchens and dining rooms. However, it is a great position for candidates that love to work with people, as much of the job revolves around interaction with employees, suppliers, and often, diners.

As a culinary manager, you can expect your salary to average around $43,000. However, salaries for food service management can range from less than $27,000 to over $70,000, so your salary can vary greatly depending on your experience, education, industry, and other important factors. In addition to typical benefits, many food service managers receive free or discounted meals on a regular basis. Some food service managers will also earn bonuses that reflect sales volume and revenue.

Food service managers can generally find work in full-service and independent restaurants and other small food service establishments. Some will use their experience and education to create their own culinary establishments and operate them as owners. Others are in special food service sectors that include schools, hospitals, government settings, and other institutions. Still others find employment in hotels and other recreation facilities. Due to high turnover rates in the industry, opportunities in these sectors are very plentiful. The industry of food service management is expected to grow about 5 percent within the next 8 years, with strong job opportunities on the horizon.
